As We Break…

In a blink of an eye,  Kabul has fallen… failed decisions by our President and no clear plan.   Yes, it matters not which president we had because 70% of Americans wanted us out.   A tragedy for so many caused by our elected officials becoming populists instead of pragmatist, followers of their base instead of leaders.  Modern American politics is broken by parties that care more about their own power and position than people or principle.  Yesterday I was depressed, today I’m mad.  But the world will go on.

As We Break

We’ve outgrown our clothes,
big and muscle bound,
tied together by a coat we wear.
This overcoat of populism
a coat ignorant of history.
Threadbare stretched across
broad backs no longer working.

We are big, but weak.
Taken down by “leaders”
who become followers
for the sake of power.
In the process they became powerless
and we leaderless.
Weakening us
as we forsake history.
And the flexibility of pragmatism
is a distant memory
given over to brittleness of populism.

And we break.

Election Result Thoughts…

I’ve been thinking about the results of the election last week.  The fact that although Joe Biden won, there really wasn’t a so called blue wave.  The results were narrow, in the sense of 5 million out of around 145 million votes cast.  But it is a clear enough repudiation of DJT in that Biden won, while down ballot Democrats continued to struggle.  This means many split their vote.   It seems to me that people are saying they’ve had enough of Trumps divisiveness, we want political figures to work together, not simply fight.  Furthermore there is a rejection of a completely progressive agenda.  People want a blend.  If you take away the labels, such as socialism and progressiveness and focus on the issues, Americans are remarkably liberal.

Locally in Florida Trump won the majority of the vote because of favorable business regulations and taxes, but a minimum wage increase to 15 over a 5 year period was approved by 62%.  People see this as fair.  It was simply treated as an issue to consider, not a liberal issue as it could have been labeled.  Likewise Amendment 1 was clearly a very right wing initiative to  re-emphasize that you must be a citizen in FL to vote in FL by adding the word “only” … it was a do nothing (except excite rightwing voters) amendment, and it was rejected by voters.

Clearly normal stable leadership is desired.  The experimentation with divisiveness and anger conservatism was rejected.  Furthermore people want to see advancement on issues that make our lives better as well as the lives of our fellow citizens.  If we stop labeling and staking out intractable positions, maybe we can talk about problems, and find compromise solutions.

A beautiful example is healthcare… who in this country would say that we cannot afford for everyone to have healthcare?  I doubt anyone would say it’s not affordable.  Yet  45 million do not have health care insurance, and another 38 million lack adequate healthcare insurance.  Is that a result that we are proud of?  I doubt it.  But we should work to address this issue with ideas from all sides, not trenches, with a no-mans-land in between, from which we lob grenades, arguing over nationalized healthcare… do away with the labels and figure out what makes most sense.  The reason we have employer-based health care is because of an accident of World War 2,  there was a wage freeze mandated, and so providing benefits was the only way companies could differentiate in the competition for human resources, so we landed there.  Is that the best solution when there is an economic downturn?  I think not.

Sensible conversations about issues is needed.  Sensible problem-solving is what Americans voted for.  Sensible leadership is what we all desire.   Stop labeling each other!

When it’s Over

The Great Contest Is Over

And when the celebration comes to an end
And it’s time to clean up the terrible mess
We realize our world will now depend
On how we now converse and address
With each other and messages we will send
To unify and forgive to assure progress
For without such we’ll surely deepen
The divide, anger, and we will regress
To an even more terrible and total end
Defeating the purpose of a great contest

Trump, the Anti-Commander-in-Chief

You know, I was so disgusted when I initially heard that Trump was not attending a visit to the cemetery in France to commemorate the end of World War I and importantly to honor the 1800 United States Marines that died in battle at Belleau Wood who are interned in the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery near Paris.  This was November 2018. Now the reports and the quotes from that time are even more disgusting and sickening.  He would not go to the cemetery, not just because of the rain.  At the time it was said that the Marine 1 could not fly, and the Motorcade would not be possible.   These were lies.  The reality is that it would be bad for his hair, and as he was quoted as saying, “Why should I go there, they were a bunch of losers”… Losers to die for their country, to fight and die bravely.
Those of you who continue to support this president, please know exactly who he is.  He does not respect our military, he does not honor our wounded veterans and fallen soldiers, he is a coward and lacks any semblance of empathy and honor.   If he does not have empathy for families of our fallen soldiers, and finds wounded veterans at parades as disgusting, and his opinion is that only losers and suckers serve in the military, then he is not eligible and not qualified to be our commander-in-chief.  He is the anti-CIC.

INCONVENIENT, LOGISTICS THEY SAID…

They Died at Belleau

Toward the guns they ran
All patriots to the last man
Dying as a million bullets flew
Fighting in the woods of Belleau
A century ago, the great war
They came to fight from afar
Inconvenienced in a great way
1800 died in the woods that day
Yet today’s leader wouldn’t face the rain
So, he sent others to salute without shame
An inconvenient 100-mile motorcade
To lay a wreath for those still there today

Masks and Politics… who knew?

How could Masks be so political?   Current polls show that 96% of Democrats wear masks, while 66% of Republicans wear masks… is Political leadership the cause of this, or is political bias the outcome of those considering if they should wear masks?

I think Mr. Trump should embrace Masks and save lives… He could have engaged his base with MAGA masks!  We all would benefit.

I think that Biden could have his own Biden Masks… we all would benefit.

Masks are uncomfortable, but a ventilator is far more uncomfortable, so much so that you must be in a coma to wear it.  I’d rather wear a mask and social distance.

An unbelievable scene…

Last night I was watching the news and saw the federal police use horses to push peaceful demonstrators off the streets in front of the white house, they used rubber bullets and tear gas as well as their horses and batons to move people, so that the president could speak on the lawn and tell the states to get their act together, to beat up and rough up the protesters, or he would send in the military, and he was doing this to protect our rights to have guns (2nd Amendment) and law and order. … the guns-right thing could only be to send a message to his right wing-nuts that they could carry guns into state capitols and intimidate others to get the country open and protect their businesses literally and figuratively.  And he made no mention of the tragic killing of yet another black man at the hands of criminal police that need to be justly arrested, tried and convicted, a right they denied George Floyd… then it became clearer why the streets were cleared of protesters, as he walked across the street for a photo-op in front of St. John’s church that was boarded up because of previous night damage during protesting turned violent.  People were hurt and treated roughly so he could go for a photo-op holding a bible, initially upside down until one of his sycophants corrected the pose.  Protesters were wrong to do damage to property and hurt others, including police, and the president is wrong to stoke divides in this country.
My God, what evil has been unleashed on our country by our own people, by our votes that said we don’t care what kind of person he is, just tear down the (deep) state… the mechanisms of government that protected us for years and still work despite his drive toward authoritative rule …. we are descending into a hell of our own making… rather than taking the opportunities to address the sins of our past and present with just changes and understanding and sympathy for others.   Donald, just go to your bunker and stay there locked away with your fear and go ahead and spin your narcissistic stories of greatness, but keep it to yourself, your form of help is not needed anymore.

Transformational Times and Easter Sunday

Every few generations, every 50 or 70 years, the world seems to present a seminal event that transforms who we are, that brings about the creativity and the initiative that is needed to move humanity toward a better future.  These seminal events always are painful, with great suffering, then we rise above it.  Jesus showed us the way two millennial ago, when he overcame great suffering and death to rise again and to teach us.  We are still commemorating this transformational gift to humanity today, even this very day!

So too, it is right for us to reflect on what presents as challenges today.  The suffering must change all of us.  These times present an opportunity to our next generation to bring science, math, testing, service, sacrifice, compassion, even humor in a creative and innovative way to problems we have previously ignored.  Problems with poverty, social/economic divides, politics, mythologies that affect the very survival and health of humanity.   We don’t know what the changes will be, but there will be change.  We don’t know what the lasting effects will be, but they will be there and they will be the legacy of the generation that is learning today about what things we must value.  Education, health, science of testing, of data, of modeling, and how and who pays to reconstruct our economies.  Maybe universal healthcare will be viewed differently when the bills come due for the battle being fought.  Maybe we’ll have a different understanding of the impact of improper nutrition and inadequate education on the communities that will pay the highest price in this pandemic.  Maybe we’ll value frontline warriors currently in this fight more generously.  Maybe those that are homeschooling will value anew the educators in our society.  Possibly we’ll have a renewed sense of what is important in our lives as we socialize at a distance.

But for sure we will change.  For sure our next generation will bring forth ideas and creativity and purpose and they will do it with more compassion and more love than some of us that came before.

Yes, there are profiteers, and scammers and others that evilly take advantage of this situation, just as there were soldiers casting lots for the garments of Jesus… but they will not fare well in the coming world and coming times.

I put my faith in the resurrection of humanity led by a new generation that is coming into awareness at this time.  A new generation that will transform our world in ways hard for us to imagine today.  But it will happen.  It must, for it is the history and legacy of humanity.  For every tragedy there is a response, an advancement, and I for one have great hope in humanity and our young adults that are truly amazing.

Happy Easter!

Keys to Success…

Keys to success in business

  1. Be prepared
  2. See risk and opportunities
  3. Be prepared
  4. Persist through challenges
  5. Be prepared
  6. Take care of your team first
  7. Be prepared

How to Succeed

In things of intent, be prepared for all
As fate’s prospects for fortune rise or fall
Are not for you to now or ever know
But rather be prepared for all that show
For your opportunities will come
As will risk, as sure as the rising sun
And the one prepared will win the day
And in the final analysis will get to say
What goes here and what goes there
As well as what is mine and yours to share
And if you think of all the others first
Before yourself and your ambitious thirst
Then you’ll be the leader whose most prepared
When it’s time to act and for wisdom shared
And if your talent, preparation and fates allow
You’ll have success, as well as the team who follow
And joined in the joy of a journey of many wins
That build wealth of success as well as friends

Embrace Gray

I’ve been thinking about the complexity of the world, about business issues I’ve been involved in, about relationships, and about how we experience all of it. Increasingly this is good, that is bad, or more imminently it seems, it is THEY are good and THEY are bad. In business I see decisions being made based on limited analysis. In politics I see decisions made based on abstract ideas with no grounding in life’s realities. Thomas Mann in his encouragement to the defense of democracy, warned against “pure abstraction”, and “the complete isolation of the mind from life itself” … because it allows us to see the world as black and white, right and wrong, and ignore the complexity of life. He also worried about our susceptibility to “the charm of novelty” … Grabbing on to the latest new idea without understanding the implications, and most importantly the unintended consequences. New is not bad, nor is it good, new is just new, something to be understood, and folded into the complexity of the real world.
Some are even proud of seeing the world in stark terms; black/white, good/bad, with-me/ against-me. As if ignoring the complexities of business, politics, of life is something meritorious. I believe that exploring complexity allows us to see in those gray areas as opportunity. Goodness hiding in the margin of sunrise, and sunset, when the colors shine, it is not day or night, it’s that gray-time in between. We are not wholly good or bad, but we are all gray. Business or politics is not win or lose, its compromise for a purpose. Computers can see through the RGB model 256 shades of gray… why can’t we see some ourselves? Complexity exists, and must be seen and embraced in order to be mastered. Education, and principled hope leads to wisdom and understanding, and advancement.
I think mothers know this better than fathers. They know that nurturing is always a case of operating in the gray zone. Finding the potential in a malcontent, in someone that is resisting learning, resisting change, when they are changing the most. Those that claim the high ground of right and wrong and black and white, are only doing so to bludgeon to death the gray and its inherent beauty in their own lives. Embrace complexity, embrace conflicting information, evaluate and then decide and promote, and grow, and learn even more. Then when you understand, it is possible to communicate a position clearly.

The Thomas Mann quotes were from an article by Nadia Schadlow in the WSJ, titled Thomas Mann’s Message for America in the Digital Age.

Thomas Mann won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1929.
A quote attributed to him: War is only a cowardly escape from the problems of peace.
