Personification…

In the poem there is a metaphysical aspect regarding the beginning of everything.  Quantum physics says that matter can spontaneously appear out of a vacuum, as if nothingness is something.  While the duality of the poem seeks to portray a message that is relatable to the desperation of feeling you have nothing but potential… and yet the emptiness of everything as in knowing nothing.  There is a thought of preconception, when we are nothing but potential, but at the end of our life we have everything we will ever have but it will not be enough, because we know nothing or more precisely we understand the emptiness of everything.  In the end all that will matter to us is the people that we’ve loved and who loved us.

Nothing

Nothing screams into the night
Of desire and possibilities
For nothing is potential

While everything cries at night
About missed possibilities
For everything knows nothing

A rewrite of Anonymity…

Anonymity

How can anyone know all you think

If you don’t occasionally make a stink

You think it matters little today

Because they won’t listen anyway

As anonymity of the masses rule

Forwarding some mindless drool

That you know is about winning a game

Without added-value of a label or name

You know you have so much more to add

Than those unthoughtful and persistently mad

While I say, it’s hard to know who you are

If you never reach for your intellectual star

If you never say your piece

Or sign anything more than a lease

When you have an opinion you never share

Even though you privately, desperately care

Don’t allow others to talk for you

It’s time to add something new

For the world could be positively changed

With your words properly arranged

Maybe your thoughts are just what’s needed

And we’d all be better off

if your thoughtful words were heeded

On Optimism …

Optimism

Optimism is hope with probability
It is the fickle winds of fate
Shaped by the preparatory efforts
Of our mind and our soul energy
For the winds blow beyond our knowing
To faraway lands and return
For there is nowhere to go but around
And for this we can always count
On a chance, a choice, and return
In worship of hope shaped by optimism

Boredom

Boredom

If your mind has nothing to do
and no matter if otherwise calm
Then it routs around looking for you
for it is yourself that it seeks as a balm
While time seems so very heavy
the clock moving ever slower
Water imperceptibly rising against a levee
seeking to find its way to a lower
Level of thought, in another place and time
that doesn’t fit with these moments
And yourself you simply cannot find
as relativity warps and foments
A gravity that makes a curve in time and space
when it was then, just before it is
Now in this very same time and place

Cardboard… so many questions…

Cardboard Box Revolution

We live in a city, because of the industrial revolution
And the suburbs because of automotive highway revolution
Then online shopping came to us via an information revolution
And a pandemic moved Christmas from malls to online
Resulting in a cardboard revolution

I’ve seen a leather wrist watch strap shipped in a shoe size box
We get exercise benefits getting all the cardboard into recycling
Will this cardboard be used to ship something to us in two or three months?
Is this an endless cycle?
Have I handled these fibers more than once?
If not,
What do we do with all the extra cardboard for last mile shipping?
Who is making money in this cardboard revolution?

Oh, and I need a bigger recycling bin!

Remembering Penny Candy…

Penny Candy

It was 1965
I had a two coins in my hand
Running to the corner store
For cigarettes and a few pennies for candy
Grandma wanted her cigarettes
But I took careful time to view the candy
Trying to pick what I wanted, such an array
So many wonderful choices
With my brother, who wanted a say as well
Candy cigarettes were cool
But bubble gum had a cartoon wrapper
While taffy lasted a long time,
And so a decision was made
The candy cigarettes had 10 in a pack
And could be rolled up in my sleeve
As we each had one on our walk
Back to Grandma’s house
With two packs of cigarettes
One of twenty and one of ten

All Politics is Local…

I was thinking about a statement, which is most associated with the great Speaker of the House in the Ronald Reagan era, Tip O’Neil, namely that “All politics is local”  …  even in a presidential election, it is apparent that it is local county and state election officials that determine and certify election results, and in key states this year have upheld the will of the people in the election of Joe Biden as the next President of these United States.  Many, of these local officials are Republicans, that have held firm to the law, to our democratic principles despite withering pressure from Trump and his campaign, and local pressure, including death threats from Trump supporters.

These true patriots are not bending to threats, to conspiracy theories and to the pressure of the people they have had long professional associations.  All politics is local… and we are fortunate that the founders of this country structured our federal election system the way they did, so that it was so big and diverse that we would have to work with each other to be successful, so that all the individual states of our country would have a say, so that local officials would provide for, represent and support the wisdom of the local politic.

I was also thinking that we are fortunate for the County Public Health officials that are holding the line, without adequate Federal, and many times State Political leader support.  They have been threatened for delivering public health advice based on data and science for the benefit of all us.   It takes brave people to do their job when it is unpopular.

Our institutions are working, our local leadership has shown commitment to data, science, to democracy and the law.  What is wrong with people that threaten those that are doing their job for our benefit to the best of their ability?  What is wrong with Washington GOP Leaders that refuse to support the local election officials for fear of a president on his way out of office?   A president who by the way, lost an election when down-ballot Republicans did very well… it says the people voted this president out because he is not what we want or need… this election was not a repudiation of conservative policy and principles. It was a repudiation of Donald Trump.

We should see local officials doing their job for democracy, or for public health as heroes… and show distain for our National Republican leadership.   Especially the loser on his way out. Thankfully, all politics are still local.

November Days…

Interesting… December starts on Tuesday this week… bringing highs in the 50’s … Can November, longer stay?

November Days

The sun warms our November days
And so we delight in soaking its rays
Until the evening arrives
When the sun quietly hides
And the air turns brightly cool
As it’s time for the moon to rule
Oh November behaving so well
May we a little longer dwell
And put off, Decembers biting cold
If you allow our request, so bold
